The Division of Experimental Pathology was founded in 1996 as a research division of the Department of Pathology under the National Development Plan 7 of the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University . The main objectives of this division are 1) to conduct high-quality research in academic pathology, with a primary emphasis on cellular and molecular mechanisms of tropical diseases and related cancer, 2) to provide strong predoctoral and postdoctoral training through related graduate programs and 3) to strengthen research capacity and capability of the staff by multidisciplinary collaborations both within the university and internationally.

The Division consists of rather well-equipped laboratories located primarily on the 4th floor of Clinical Building 2 of the Faculty of Medicine. Major research facilities include equipments for histology, immunohistochemistry, cell culture & cell storage, PCR and In situ PCR, electrophoresis & imaging, ELISA and photomicrography. In addition, it is supported by a number of laboratories in the Department of Pathology and other preclinical departments, including fluorescence microscope, flow cytometer, DNA sequencer, electron microscope (TEM & SEM), animal house, etc.

Research conducted by Division staff is supported by Medical Faculty and University grants during early establishment. At present the main sources of grant support are from National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), Thailand Research Fund (TRF) and Thailand-Tropical Diseases Research Programme (T-2). Other sources of extramural and intramural funding are also received.

The Division has strongly supported graduate research and education in the Departments of Pathology, Anatomy, Parasitology, Biochemistry, and Microbiology since the first establishment. Several articles and textbooks related to pathology and pathobiology of liver flukes and cancer have been generated by the Division, helping to support its goal of training researchers in academic pathology and conducting innovative basic research in tropical diseases and related cancer.
